In the 1950s, the city's downtown was jam-packed on Thursday nights. Generally, Thursday was payday and since there were no other major retail stores in the area, foot traffic flooded Main Street, said Mark McEachern, executive director of the Torrington Historical Society. (Updated) Multiple Crews Contain Six Acre Middlefield Fire
Fire crews from Middlefield and surrounding agencies are combating flames that have crossed over a 4-5 acre area. The fire is contained, officials said, but the brush fire is still threatening to spread underground. Dozens of firefighters and emergency responders have contained a brush fire that broke out in a section of Middlefield near Lake Beseck early Monday morning.
Fire Severely Damages Wallingford House
All of the occupants made it out safely, however the house appears inhabitable following the Tuesday afternoon blaze. Two families have been displaced following a fire that ripped through a Dutton Street home in Wallingford Tuesday afternoon. It took 26 firefighters from both Wallingford and Meriden around an hour and a half to completely extinguish the fire at two-family home at 18 Dutton St., which left the building with significant damage on the second and third floors, said Deputy Fire Chief Steve Alsup.
